Hurricane Ian Relief Fund Response (2022-2023):

When Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida on September 28, 2022, the storm surge caused catastrophic damage to Harlem Heights, a low-income neighborhood in Fort Myers. Residents lost their homes, their vehicles, and their jobs.

Harlem Heights was originally settled as a rural agricultural community. The poverty rate for children in Harlem Heights is more than twice the county average, with family income 40% below the county average.

The Epsilon Nu Boule Foundation of Southwest Florida provided funds for 40 Harlem Heights families to receive appliance packages to replace those lost in the storm.

“We are so grateful for the support of The Epsilon Nu Boule Foundation,” said Kathryn Kelly, CEO of The Heights Foundation/The Heights Center. “Their generous donation means 40 families can return to their homes.”

To date, nearly 5,000 volunteers have contributed almost 200,000 hours to rebuild the homes in Harlem Heights, with an estimated volunteer labor cost of almost $5 million. The Heights Foundation’s goal was to have all of the residents of the 173 severely damaged residences back in their homes by Christmas. They were successful and we were proud to contribute.
